ISO IEC 42001 Lead Auditor

ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor

Course Overview

You are about to develop a rare and highly marketable capability: the ability to audit an Artificial Intelligence Management System against ISO/IEC 42001 — the world's first certifiable management-system standard for AI. Organizations everywhere are deploying AI faster than they can govern it. Regulators, boards, customers, and the public are all asking the same question — "Can we trust how this organization builds and uses AI?" As a certified Lead Auditor, you become the person who can answer it with evidence.

This program is practical first. You won't just learn what the standard says — you'll plan an audit, sit across from a Chief AI Officer, test whether an AI impact assessment is real or theatre, write a defensible nonconformity, and manage an audit program end to end. Every concept is paired with a script, an example, an exercise, and a reusable template.

Why ISO/IEC 42001 matters

Published in December 2023, ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international standard letting an organization establish, maintain, and continually improve a management system specifically for AI — and, crucially, one that can be independently certified. It turns "trust us, our AI is responsible" into a certified system with controls, records, and independent audit.

Trust becomes evidence A certified AIMS with controls and records replaces vague assurances.

Aligned to the regulatory wave A governance backbone that maps to emerging AI obligations.

It creates a profession A certifiable standard needs competent, independent auditors — you.

The future of AI governance

  • From principles to proof — demand is shifting from ethics statements to auditable controls and sampleable records.
  • From one-off checks to living systems — because models drift and retrain, governance must be continuous (exactly what 42001 formalizes).
  • From siloed to integrated — 42001 increasingly runs alongside ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 9001.
  • From internal to independent — boards and customers increasingly want third-party assurance.

Prerequisites & audience

This is an advanced course. A working understanding of management systems (e.g., ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 27001), audit experience, or a background in AI, data, risk, or compliance is recommended. You do not need to be a data scientist — Module 2 brings everyone to a common baseline.
